Sorting in Sheet Set Manager Model Tab

adesk answer day

Alright then… Back from an extended writing hiatus. I’ve not been terribly busy but seemed to need a break from writing.  Today, I am doing some help desk coverage while other members of the team are headed to training at an Autodesk event. This happens every year coinciding with the new releases of the software/applications. So, to get myself warmed up a bit, I took a stroll down to the Autodesk forums and found something called Autodesk Answer Day. The idea is that it is a live Q&A session hosted on a certain forum page. The first answer day was an AutoCAD Answer Day hosted on this board this past Friday on May 7th, 2015. The people responding ranged from community managers and customer service to product designers and analysts.

One of the first topics I noticed was about the sheet set manager. If you have no idea what that is, PLEASE take a minute to educate yourself about the most underused power tool in the AutoCAD platform. Now that you’re familiar, let’s find out what problem is being asked. “Jarsky” wanted to know why the drawings and folders on the model tab did not sort alphabetically. See below for what was happening to him. Read more of this post

Civil3D Zero Screen–No Vault Option

Just a quick note… For those that might be using Vault already, this will not be news. For those contemplating / testing Vault for your firms, this will help you past a stumbling block.

First, the issue… Some firms like to have Civil3D startup at what’s called the zero screen as shown above. It’s a clean place to start your work effort. You’ve got a list of Recent Documents front and center. You’ve got templates available to start new drawings, and so on. What you don’t have is:

  • Open File from Vault
  • Open Sheet Set from Vault

Profile Abbreviations broken?

I know everyone is well aware of drawing settings in Civil 3D. And in those settings is a tab for various abbreviations used throughout Civil3D. That dialog box looks like this:

Default Drawing Settings

Default Drawing Settings

If you collapse all of the headings, the very last group is for profile label abbreviations. Yeah, yeah, get to the point.

They don’t work.

See, be careful of what you wish for.  All other properties work in each group except for PROFILE.  Wait a minute… Civil 3D has been out awhile and so has abbreviations. This can’t be right, could it? So here’s the details….

iPad Emulator?

Just a quick note.  I came across a helpful tidbit last week regarding Apple products and how to demonstrate various things without actually owning said device. First, why do I need to do this? Well, for starters, Autodesk has become very cloud and mobile centric. As such, it becomes increasingly difficult to both demonstrate and educate firms and employees about these services. Until now.

May I introduce to you ipadpeek.com.

Autodesk AutoCAD 360

Autodesk AutoCAD 360

I am now able to provide adequate demonstration/education with having to own or even find a way to project said devices.  Now, i do realize this is completely web based and there are no apps to display.  My primary focus using this tool is to educate people around the Autodesk 360 service as well as Infrastructure Map Server and how we can leverage design information in the field….

Washing Sketchup 3D models

Washing Sketchup 3D Models - 1

Ron Couillard over at CADsoft Consulting has 2 great posts here and here on doing laundry.  I mean using Civil 3D as a way to wash the 3D models in the Trimble 3D warehouse (previously known as the sketchup warehouse) so they can be used in Infrastructure Modeler. Pick you favorite model and drop it in AIM, or whatever we’re calling it now.  :)

Or I should say Infraworks for the 2014 version. Man, can somebody just buy everything once so I can keep track of all these things? I’m not getting any younger….  :)Washing Sketchup 3D Models

Project Chronicle Captures

Project Chronicle

Project Chronicle, if you don’t know, is an Autodesk Lab solution to capturing workflows in your Autodesk app of choice. I’ve been using this for some time now and realized I hadn’t shared about it…

Anyway, while doing my weekly blog reading, The CAD Geek reminded me of how great this little gem is with his recent write up.

By the way, it’s a completely free app! You can find a gallery of posted Chronicles @ chronicle.autodesk.com.

Go check it out and use it share your knowledge with your company, user group or the world!
