In search of… Sustainable Design for Civil Engineers


When I last talked about this, we were discussing various organizations that are leading the professional industry. Which led me to look for post-secondary institutions that might be leading FUTRE industry professionals. With one simple search, I found this treasure….

I had heard about MIT offering courses over the web for free to the community at large. So I browsed the course listing under Civil and Environmental Engineering and found three courses on the subject! The dates listed refer to the semester in which the course was recorded.

11.366J / 1.817J Planning for Sustainable Development

Spring 2006

This course explores policy and planning for sustainable development. It critically examines concept of sustainability as a process of social, organizational, and political development drawing on cases from the U.S. and Europe. It also explores pathways to sustainability through debates on ecological modernization; sustainable technology development, international and intergenerational fairness, and democratic governance.

1.964 Design for Sustainability

Fall 2006

The course considers the growing popularity of sustainability and its implications for the practice of engineering, particularly for the built environment. Two particular methodologies are featured: life cycle assessment (LCA) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The fundamentals of each approach will be presented. Specific topics covered include water and wastewater management, energy use, material selection, and construction.

1.020 Ecology II: Engineering for Sustainability

Spring 2007

This course covers the use of ecological and thermodynamic principles to examine interactions between humans and the natural environment. Topics include conservation and constitutive laws, box models, feedback, thermodynamic concepts, energy in natural and engineered systems, basic transport concepts, life cycle analysis and related economic methods.

Topics such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green buildings, and mitigation of climate change are illustrated with quantitative case studies. Case studies are team-oriented and may include numerical simulations and design exercises. Some programming experience is desirable but not a prerequisite. Instruction and practice in oral and written communication are provided.

Looks like we have some work to do to catch up.  🙂
