Requiring Licensure for Data Prep: The Debate Continues

I’m not a big fan of reposting information on the web, but I thought it would be prudent for us to keep our eye on this developing topic.  What is the topic?  DTM creation for construction / machine control use.  Harry Ward, PE has a column in Site Prep Magazine broken into to 2 parts so far.  Part 1 covers the growing governmental regulation of DTM creation, requiring a licensed professional to prepare such data.  Part 2 covers possible effects this will have on the AEC community at large. Additonally, there is a feedback section to offer your viewpoints as well.

This is definitely something to watch.  Now that the software/hardware available has 3D tools to create the intial designs, is this something we want to pass on for free to the contractor?  Passing simple lines and text wasn’t a perceived big deal. The question has become who has the liability?  Is it in the public interest that licensed professionals prepare DTMs?  Let them know your thoughts!
